STEP 1: Selection of blogging platform.

STEP 2: Choosing and setting up of domain and hosting.
Now for the step 2 of our tutorial on “How to start a blog ?” you need to buy a domain name and a hosting service.
What is a domain name and Hosting? Well, a domain name is a web address like for our website it is www.onepointblogs.com. A web hosting service is what allows you to host a website so that anyone can access or visit your website via World Wide Web.
Before you select a domain name, think which topic you are going to cover and then choose a domain name as it should relate to the topic you will be blogging about.
Now that you have selected a domain name now you can buy a domain name and hosting services via any hosting provider of your choice. But if you don’t want to buy in the beginning then you have free hosting available as well but the domain name might not be as per your wish as they will have their website name at the end of the URL.
So let’s check out Hostinger. They provide free as well as paid hosting service and Domain name. So, first of all, click on the link here https://www.hostinger.in/web-hosting#plans-pricing and choose a plan to begin.
After you select a plan, the browser will redirect you to a login page, click on create a new account.
Fill up the details needed to create the account and click on create a new account.
Next, it will show you the order summary and the price you will need to pay. Click on checkout now to proceed to payment.
Select payment method, and tick “I agree with” to accept terms and conditions, then click on complete order.
After successful payment, a message stating “Congratulations, you are almost done! You have to setup your new orders before use.” will be displayed and an email would also be sent which will have the payment details. Click on setup to create a database and install WordPress.
After clicking on the setup, you will be redirected to a page which looks like the picture below. Click on the installer to install WordPress.
Next, select your hosting account that and select WordPress as an application as below and click on configure.
Next, fill in all the necessary details like Administrator username, Administrator password, Administrator email ID and website name and its tagline and click on install.
After installation clicks on details to view the website details.
Click on the external link icon, it will redirect you to the dashboard login page.
So the login page looks like this, enter the Administrator username and Administrator password to log in.
After logging in you will see the WordPress Dashboard. Which would look somewhat like the picture below.
STEP 3: Customization.
So you’re through with Step 1 & 2, now it’s time for step 3 in our tutorial “how to start a blog ?”. Before we go straight to customization we should get familiar with WordPress. WordPress comes with a various option and it is very easy to use once you get used to it.
Some of the options you need to learn before you jump in straight to posting blogs. These are:
Layout & Themes: Use this to modify and design your blog as per your taste and likings. Just look for a theme that you like and hit install and activate.
Plugins: These are essential add-ons that enable special functions or features to your blog.
Settings: As the name suggests, here you can edit your blog’s title, tagline, email, password and much more.
Adding Content: Just click on “Post” and “Add New”, put in the title as well as the content that you want to post. And click on publish that’s it. You have successfully added a post.
These options can be overwhelming at first, but I assure you that it is very simple and doesn’t require one to study rocket science.
WordPress comes with some pre-installed themes and you have a huge collection of themes that are available for free as well as paid also.
Login to WordPress and open dashboard. For this, you need to put /wp-admin/ at the end of your website URL address and log in using your Administrator Username and Administrator Password. Once you login to Dashboard, hover the cursor over appearance then click on themes.
Click on add new. Here, you can browse numerous themes.
Find the theme that suits your blog and click install and activate.
Creating new Page or Post.
Adding a new page or posting a blog is simple and easy. It is almost like working in MS Word. Just click on Pages or Posts and then add new.
These are some important elements that will be needed for creating a post. These are:
- Title (H1): This is the main title of the page or post.
- Add Media: As the name suggests, you can use this to add upload, customize and insert images into the content.
- Toolbar: Has various formatting options like one would find in MS Word like bold text, italics, change text size, etc.
- Visual/Text Tabs: Switch between visual or front end editor or text or backend. The backend is needed for adding shortcodes.
- Publish Box: You can save as draft, or publish your content. Or update your content once you publish it.
- Content- This is where you type in the content of the blog with links and media.
Adding Pages to Menu.
Similarly, you can add posts to the menu as well. For this just find the post tab and expand and then you can find all the blog posts organized.
Creating Categories and Organizing Blog Posts.
In order to keep the blog look organized you need to have categories. So the audience can head over to a particular section or category and look for the post they wish to read.
You can add categories by clicking on to post then categories, put the name of the category and the slug in lowercase. For example, You want a category for Mobiles, then type name as mobiles and also slug as mobiles. Similarly, whenever you are writing or editing a post you can create a new category.
Changing Blog Title and Tagline.
You can edit your blog name and tagline by going to Setting and then clicking on General. This is necessary as it looks professional when someone searches for your website, then they will get a proper search result and will be able to go to your blog.
Disable spam comment by going to Settings then Discussion and checking “Comment must be manually approved” & “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”.
If you don’t want to keep comment section on particular page then while creating that particular page or post, locate and click on the screen options on the top right corner and untick “Allow Comments”
Don’t block search engines from crawling blog. For this go to settings then reading, scroll to the bottom of the page and untick “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”.
Create a Static Homepage
A static page is a page that never changes. It has customized content and it remains the same even if you keep on adding content your blog site. This looks professional and well organized. If you wish not to add a static page then the latest post would be shown on the home page.
To add a static homepage got to settings then reading, choose the Page you want to show as your static page and that’s it.
Edit the Sidebar
WordPress themes mostly come with sidebar and often includes default sidebar items that one might not need. So it is a good idea to edit and add or remove options that you might not need. For this Go to appearance then widgets, use drag and drop to add or remove different boxes from the sidebar. You can add any information or latest post or archived posts and social media button and additional navigation.
